NT-proBNP is a compound released when excess volume or pressure stretches the walls of the heart's chambers. Significantly increased levels are associated with congestive heart failure. Increasing levels can be seen with cardiovascular risk, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Therefore, levels should be monitored in the event they are associated with impending heart failure.
Levels of NT-proBNP can increase with age, renal insufficiency, and anemia, even in the absence of heart failure, so levels themselves are not considered diagnostic. A complete clinical evaluation and monitoring are essential to an accurate interpretation of NT-proBNP levels.
