Histamine is a compound involved in immune reactions and various bodily functions under normal conditions. However, excess levels can lead to histamine intolerance, causing symptoms like headaches, rashes, and digestive discomfort.
Histamine intolerance can occur due to a deficiency in enzymes like DAO that break down histamine, leading to its accumulation. Certain foods high in histamine, like aged cheeses, fermented products, and alcohol, may trigger symptoms.
Excess levels are seen in mast cell activation syndrome as well.
Managing histamine intolerance often includes following a low-histamine diet, avoiding certain medications, and considering supplements like vitamin C or DAO to help alleviate symptoms.
