Magnesium is Magnificent

Magnesium is a nutrient superstar. It participates in the function of more than 600 metabolic enzymes and therefore affects the function of just about every organ in the body. It is especially important to the heart, brain, bones, and muscles, and also participates in maintaining blood glucose at a healthy level.

Insufficiency of magnesium is common and is associated with cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmias, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, headaches, depression, metabolic syndrome, sleep disturbances, and kidney stones. Magnesium can also be low due to poor diet and can be depleted by certain medications including diuretics and insulin.

An excess of magnesium is uncommon but can be associated with decreased kidney function or excessive intake. Some medications may increase magnesium including certain antacids, loop diuretics, and thyroid hormone replacement.
