Homeostatic Model Assessment (HOMA) utilizes results from fasting glucose, insulin, and/or C-peptide. It calculates how cells are responding to or resisting insulin, and how well the beta cells of the pancreas are working.
The HOMA2-IR calculation assesses the likelihood of insulin resistance and, potentially, the risk of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and heart failure.
An elevated HOMA-IR in those with diabetes may also indicate an increased risk of complications including cardiovascular complications. Insulin resistance may be associated with vitamin D insufficiency, which should also be assessed regularly.
