Helicobacter pylori, known as H. pylori, is a disease-causing bacteria know for causing full-blown ulcers but it can also cause inflammation, chronic gastritis, ulcerative esophagitis, and even gastric cancer.
Besides its association with ulcers and gastric inflammation, H. pylori is also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated with diabetes, metabolic syndrome and its identifying factors: elevated BMI, triglycerides, fasting glucose, and insulin resistance. It is one of the most common infections around the world.
Checking for antibodies in the blood is an easy, relatively non-invasive way to screen for H. pylori compared to biopsy and culture. Antibody levels are also assessed to monitor response to therapy.
