Does Vitamin C Interfere with Labs?

Ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, can interfere with certain laboratory tests, particularly those that use peroxidase or hydrogen peroxide methods, affecting the accuracy of results.

This interference can cause either an increase or decrease in biomarker values depending on the lab method used and the concentration of ascorbic acid present.

High levels of ascorbic acid, typically seen with intravenous use, can lead to significant distortions in test results for a variety of markers including sodium, potassium, calcium, and creatinine, while making others like cholesterol and triglycerides undetectable.

It is recommended to limit ascorbic acid intake before undergoing tests that might be affected by its presence to ensure more accurate measurements.
