Can You Have Too Much Sex Hormone Binding Globulin?

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein that regulates the availability of sex hormones in the blood, and its levels can vary due to dietary and lifestyle factors.

SHBG increases with age, and dietary patterns like low-protein and low-fat diets can lead to higher SHBG levels.

Conversely, a high-protein, high-fat diet might reduce SHBG, potentially increasing the availability of testosterone.

Alcohol intake also influences SHBG levels, where moderate drinking might decrease it, but excessive consumption could triple SHBG levels.

Additionally, elevated SHBG is linked to various health issues, including bone density reduction, increased fracture risk, and higher susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases and prostate cancer.
