Are Basophils Behind Your Allergies?

Basophils are white blood cells that remain relatively calm and low in the blood until confronted with an allergen or parasite. They then spring into action and release all sorts of inflammatory compounds, including histamine, that can cause itching, dermatitis, and even anaphylactic shock in some cases. They can be elevated above their normal 1% of total WBCs with chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, allergies, and parasitic infestation. 

It appears that communication with the beneficial microbes that live in our gastrointestinal tracts helps to keep basophils in check and on track.
