Band cells, a type of immature neutrophil, also known as immature granulocytes, increase in response to acute bacterial infection, sepsis, trauma, and other triggers like surgery, tissue damage, and certain cancers.
They are released into circulation during significant stimulation of neutrophil production, a phenomenon known as a "shift to the left". Elevated band cell levels can help distinguish sepsis from non-infectious systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).
These cells perform some functions of mature neutrophils, and their elevated levels indicate the likelihood of bloodstream infection, with in-hospital mortality also increasing proportionately.
Band cells contribute to the body's immune response, but their high levels may indicate a more serious health concern, requiring medical attention.
