Measuring low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle number provides a better assessment of cardiovascular risk and underlying disease than simply measuring LDL cholesterol.
An elevated LDL particle number is linked to factors such as inflammation, insulin resistance, unhealthy diet, and high trans-fat intake, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Although a low LDL particle number might not be clinically relevant, a high particle number can identify "hidden" cardiovascular risks in those with low LDL cholesterol levels.
To maintain a healthy LDL particle number, a diet low in trans fats and saturated fats, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight are recommended.
LDL Particle number can be measured using the ion mobility method.
