CK-MB is a form of creatine kinase, an enzyme that helps produce energy. It is found mainly in the heart but can also be found in other high-energy tissues.
When the heart muscle is damaged, CK-MB is released, and levels rise in the blood.
Elevated CK-MB can indicate a heart attack or other heart problems, but levels can also increase with intense exercise, skeletal muscle damage, muscle diseases, or following invasive cardiac procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Vitamin C can help reduce damage and CK-MB levels following PCI.
Because CK-MB isn't entirely specific to heart damage, troponin tests are now preferred for diagnosing heart attacks.
